Mohamed Wasuge from Regent at Burnsville was named the Caregiver of the Year by LeadingAge Minnesota at the organization’s annual Institute & Expo.

The Caregiver of the Year Award honors individuals in older adult services who demonstrate exceptional commitment to older adults and enrich the quality of life of those in their care. Wasuge was selected for the prestigious award out of a field of more than 60,000 professional caregivers in LeadingAge Minnesota’s membership.

“Mohamed Wasuge lives a mission to provide person-centered care, services and support to those entrusted to his care. He sets a true example for other staff with his kindness and compassion,” said Kari Thurlow, President & CEO, LeadingAge Minnesota. “A leader among his co-workers, Mohamed has warmed the hearts of many with his friendly smile, positive attitude, whistling, endless energy and person-centered care. It is our honor to recognize Mohamed for his commitment, dedication and distinguished service to older adults.”

Wasuge has worked at The Regent for 13 years where he currently serves as a both a Home Health Aide and Medication Aide. Throughout his career, he has focused on providing excellent customer service and personalized care. He is patient, taking the time to visit with the residents, learning their life’s journey, their daily routines and their long-held traditions.

“Mohamed has always given more than 100% of himself, but this past year has been unbelievable,” said Vikki Tobroxen, Executive Director, Augustana Regent at Burnsville. “As COVID hit our building late last year, we struggled with covering shifts and he led the way in encouraging others to pick up extra shifts. Mohamed continues to pick up 30 – 40 extra hours each week, working most weekends to make sure our residents needs are met.”

The impact of Wasuge’s compassionate caregiving has been felt most by his residents and their families.

“Our family is very grateful for the wonderful care Mohamed provides my mom with management of her medications. He is not only diligent, observant and caring as he goes about his duties, but he brings joy into the apartment every time he comes to administer mom’s medication,” said Lindy Naj. “Mohamed goes above and beyond in sharing his positive energy. We have a profound respect and admiration for him as a person as well as a caregiver.”
